Know your Roof - A Cloud9 Roofing Guide

Navigating the world of roofing can feel overwhelming, for many homeowners. However, understanding common roofing terms is crucial for making informed decisions about your home's roof.

Our Cloud9 Roofing team can help you decipher the jargon to give you greater clarity on understanding your roofing needs.

Pitch: The slope of a roof, expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run. Roof pitch influences water runoff, snow accumulation, and the choice of roofing materials.

Underlayment: A water-resistant material installed beneath the shingles to provide an extra layer of protection against leaks. Underlayment acts as a secondary barrier, preventing water from penetrating the roof deck in case shingles are damaged.

Flashing: Metal sheets used to seal critical areas of the roof where it intersects with other surfaces like chimneys, valleys, and skylights. Flashing prevents water intrusion at these vulnerable points, ensuring the roof's integrity.

Eaves: The overhanging edges of a roof that extend beyond the walls of the building. Eaves provide shade, protect exterior walls from rain, and contribute to the overall aesthetics of the home.

Ridge: The highest point of a roof where two sloping sides meet. The ridge is a crucial structural element and requires proper ventilation and sealing to prevent leaks.

Valley: The internal angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof surfaces. Valleys are prone to water accumulation, making them critical areas for proper flashing and drainage.

Soffit: The underside of the eaves, often vented to allow airflow into the attic and prevent moisture buildup.

Fascia: A board that runs along the edge of the roof, typically where the eaves meet the walls, supporting the gutter system.

Rafter: A sloping beam that supports the roof deck and covering.

Truss: A pre-fabricated, triangular frame used to support the roof structure.

Vent Pipe: A pipe that extends through the roof to allow ventilation for the plumbing system, typically capped with a vent cap.

Cricket: A small, peaked structure built behind chimneys or other roof obstructions to redirect water flow and prevent ponding.

Pitch Pocket: A waterproof container used to seal around pipes or other penetrations in the roof to prevent water from entering the building.

Gutter: Channels attached to the roof's edge to collect and direct rainwater away from the foundation. Gutters play a vital role in protecting your home's foundation from water damage.

Downspout: Vertical pipes that carry rainwater collected by gutters to ground level. Downspouts ensure proper water drainage away from the house.

Shingles: Individual overlapping pieces of material used to cover a roof, typically made of asphalt, wood, metal, or ceramic. Shingles are the primary roofing material and determine the roof's appearance and durability.

Gable: The triangular upper portion of a wall beneath a pitched roof, typically featuring a gable end with a peak.

Barge Board: A decorative board that is installed along the gable end of a roof, typically covering the exposed edge of the rafters, protecting against rain and wind and may even support anchor gutters at the roof’s edge.

Decking: The solid base layer of the roof, typically made of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). Decking provides a stable and even surface for the shingles to adhere to.
