Northern Beaches homeowners love brightening up their homes with skylights – but what about when your skylight brings in more than sunshine?

Recently, we had a call from a valued client  in Wheeler Heights facing just this frustrating issue. Their once-bright skylight had become a source of stress, and upon inspection, our Cloud9 Roofing team discovered these issues.

  • Blocked Drainage: The back of the skylight was obstructed, preventing rainwater from draining away properly. This can lead to water pooling and eventually finding its way inside your home.

  • Rusting Tray: We observed rust forming on the back tray of the skylight. Rust is a sign of prolonged exposure to moisture and can compromise the structural integrity of the tray, creating pathways for leaks.

  • Failed Lead Work Seal: The crucial junction where the lead flashing meets the bottom of the skylight tray was showing its age. The sealant had deteriorated, leaving gaps that allowed water to seep through.

These are common culprits behind skylight leaks, and if you're noticing damp patches, water stains, or even dripping around your skylight, it's crucial to address the problem promptly. Ignoring a leaking skylight can lead to more significant issues down the line, including:

  • Water Damage: To ceilings, walls, and insulation.

  • Mould Growth: Creating unhealthy living conditions.

  • Structural Issues: If left unchecked for extended periods.

The Solution: A Bright New Outlook!

For our client in Wheeler Heights, the best course of action was a new skylight supply and installation.

We recommended and installed a high-quality acrylic dome skylight with frames specifically designed to suit their tiled roof.

Here's why this was the ideal solution:

  • Durable Acrylic Dome: Acrylic is a robust and weather-resistant material that will stand up to the elements for years to come.

  • Proper Drainage Design: New skylights are designed with effective drainage channels to prevent blockages and water pooling.

  • Rust-Resistant Materials: Modern skylight trays are typically made from materials that resist rust and corrosion.

  • Professional Sealing: Our experienced team ensured a watertight seal where the new lead work meets the skylight tray, preventing future leaks.

  • Tiled Roof Integration: The new frame was specifically chosen to seamlessly integrate with the existing tiled roof, ensuring a secure and aesthetically pleasing finish.
